June Newsletter 2011 Fort Dodge Duplicate Bridge Club The Fort Dodge Sectional Tournament was a nice success. The club did net a little over $400. The goal is not to make a lot of money, but we do like to have a little profit. We did have many players from our fellow unit friends from Sioux City and the Lakes region. An added feature of this year's tournament was the board-a-match team competition during the pairs games. Pairs with fewer masterpoints were teamed with more advanced players and this provided for many more masterpoints given. There will be a sectional tournament in Sioux City June 10-12 at the Senior Center. We need to encourage our Fort Dodge players to attend and reciprocate the fine attendance of the Sioux City players at our tournament. Brochures are available for this unit's event at our playing quarters at the Senior Central. There will also be a two-day sectional tournament in Mason City on Saturday and Sunday (June 4-5) at the Senior Center. Players from Clear Lake and Mason City played in our tournament. It was nice to have Joe Anderson of El Paso, Texas, playing with us in several games in May. Joe always gets a few duplicate games in when he is back to Fort Dodge every year. Congratulations go to Susan Adams who recently attained her Gold Life- mastership. This requires 2,500 masterpoints. This is quite an accomp- lishment for any player and we are very proud of Susan. June is a very crowded month of special games for the club. The week of June 13, the club will be participating in the District 14 STaC games. All of our games' scores will be sent to Minneapolis and will be compared to all the other participating clubs of the upper Midwest. There will then be district masterpoint awards as well as local, whichever are the greater. Masterpoints are given on a sectional tournament level. Also, the club will be participating in the Grand National Pairs event. These games will held in the months of June, July, and August. These are club qualifying games. Qualifiers may procede to the district finals and then, possibly, to the national finals at the fall nationals. Check the months calendar of events for these games. Forall of these games, the entry fee is the usual $3. At the last meeting of the board of directors, the annual rent for the Senior Campus was discussed. A part of the annual rent is a requirement that the club buy 14 memberships to the Senior Campus at a cost of $30. Along with this membership will go parking space tickets at the parking lot across the street from the Senior Campus building. It was suggested that this would be good for those of us who play on Wednesday afternoons when parking spaces are limited and parking on the street could result in parking fines. So we are suggesting that primar- ily Wednesday players buy the $30 memberships. An added benefit for these memberships is that members will have the ability to use the other facilities of the Campus, e.g., the pool tables, card rooms, library, computers, and workout room. These memberships will be available in July. There will also be a regional tournament in Des Moines, June 26 through July 4, at the Sheraton West in West Des Moines. This will be a fine opportunity for those of you who are in search of gold points for you lifemasterships. Brochures are available at the playing quarters.
